Originally found on the "The Sexy Adventures of Orietta St. Cloud" soundtrack. Inspired by Colson Whitehead's great book of the same name. I read it as alternate-world, retro-future sci-fi (think "Brazil" only not as tripped-out) with a black female protagonist, elevators as metaphor for upward black mobility, and a civil rights angle in the last act. Colson is brilliant, you should check him out.
